Things That Attract Ants Inside

Ants might be tiny, but when they invade your home, they can become a big nuisance. Understanding what attracts them indoors is the first step to keeping them out for good. Whether you're dealing with an occasional trail of ants or a full-blown infestation, these are the most common things that lure them inside:

1. Water

Ants need water to survive, and your home might be the perfect source.

• Leaky taps or pipes under sinks, behind dishwashers, or around the bathroom can be enough to keep ants coming back.
• Pet water bowls left out all day are another common attractant, especially during dry months.
• Even condensation around windows or under appliances can attract thirsty ants.

2. Plumbing Leaks

A slow plumbing leak may go unnoticed by you—but not by ants. These small water sources provide both moisture and sheltered access, making them ideal for ant colonies to settle nearby and stay out of sight.

3. Food

Ants have an excellent sense of smell, and they’re constantly on the hunt for a bite.

• Leftovers on plates or crumbs on the floor can quickly become a buffet.
• Open food packets in pantries or on benchtops are a major attractant.
• Even small amounts of food spilled behind appliances can keep ants coming back.

4. Shelter

Aside from food and water, ants are also looking for a safe place to build a nest—especially in colder or wetter months. Cracks in walls, gaps in flooring, and hidden corners inside your home can provide the protection they’re looking for.

5. Sugar

Sugar is one of the top attractions for ants. Whether it’s spilled juice, soft drink residue, or a few grains of sugar from your morning coffee—sweet substances are irresistible.

• Make sure to clean up any spills immediately.
• Wipe down sugar containers, syrup bottles, and honey jars, as even small drips can catch their attention.

6. Food Crumbs and Residue

Ants don’t need a full meal—just a few crumbs are enough.

• Crumbs on kitchen floors, under toasters, or in couch cushions are easy targets.
• Sticky residues from sauces or condiments can also be highly attractive to ants if left on benchtops or dining tables.

7. Rubbish

Bins that aren’t properly sealed or emptied often are prime targets.

• Rubbish that contains food scraps, wrappers, or drink containers is especially inviting.
• Always tie rubbish bags securely and keep bins clean, with lids firmly closed.

8. Pet Food

Pet food is often overlooked, but it’s one of the most common sources of ant problems.

• Don’t leave food sitting out all day in bowls—especially outdoors or in garages.
• Clean up spills from dry kibble or wet food immediately.

9. Fruits and Vegetables

Fresh produce is healthy for you—but ants think so too.

• Fruit bowls, especially with overripe or damaged fruit, can attract ants quickly.
• Store fruits and vegetables in the fridge or sealed containers to reduce scent trails.
