New Zealands Possum Problem

Possums are a major threat to New Zealand’s natural ecosystems, with their high numbers and lack of effective natural predators—feral cats, for instance, do little to curb the possum population. These invasive pests consume native birds, their eggs, snails, wētā, buds, flowers, fruit, and berries. They also outcompete native birds for food, often occupying tree holes that would otherwise serve as nesting sites for native wildlife. The photo below shows how the spread of possums has increased dramatically over the years.

Common Brushtail Possum (Trichosurus vulpecula)

• Introduction: First brought to New Zealand from Australia in 1837 to establish a fur trade.
• Appearance: Thick fur, large pointed ears, and grey-to-black coloring. Possums are typically 65–96cm long and weigh between 1kg and 7kg.
• Habitat: They use tree hollows as full-time residences but can also invade homes and other structures.

Impact on New Zealand's Ecosystems

• Native Wildlife: They prey on native birds, their eggs, and insects like snails and wētā.
• Flora: Possums consume the buds, flowers, and fruit of native trees, disrupting growth cycles.
• Competition: They outcompete native birds and animals for food and shelter.

Our Approach to Possum Control

1. Inspection & Entry Point Sealing
   • We identify and seal all entry points to prevent possums from accessing your home or building.
2. Trap Placement
   • We lay humane and effective traps both inside and around your property to capture the possums.
3. Property Clean-Up
   • We recommend removing outdoor rubbish, food sources, and trimming plants or trees that attract possums.
4. Preventative Measures
   • Once the possums are removed, we apply deterrent scents that possums dislike, steering them away from your property for good.
