NZ Cockroach Types

New Zealand is home to several species of cockroaches, some native and others introduced. These resilient insects can be found in a variety of habitats, from forests to urban areas. While cockroaches are often associated with filth, not all species are pests; some play crucial roles in ecosystems. Below, we delve into the most common cockroach species found in New Zealand, exploring their physical features, diet, habitats, and interesting facts.

1. Gisborne Cockroach (Drymaplaneta semivitta)

 Physical Details:

• Size: Approximately 20-25mm in length.
• Appearance: Brown to dark brown with a distinct pale stripe running along its back.
• Wings: Wingless or with small vestigial wings.

What They Eat:

• Primarily decomposing organic matter, such as leaf litter and wood.
• Occasionally feeds on fungi and other decaying plant material.

Where They Can Be Found:

• Native to New Zealand, commonly found in forests and bushland.
• Prefers damp environments with ample organic debris.

Facts About the Gisborne Cockroach:

• It is not considered a pest and rarely ventures into homes.
• Plays an important ecological role in breaking down organic matter.
• Unlike many introduced species, it is wingless, which limits its spread.

2. German Cockroach (Blattella germanica)

Physical Details:

• Size: 10-15mm in length.
• Appearance: Light brown with two distinct dark parallel stripes on its pronotum (the shield-like structure behind the head).
• Wings: Fully developed wings but rarely used for flight.

What They Eat:

• Omnivorous; consumes crumbs, grease, starches, and sugary substances.
• Can eat non-food items such as soap, toothpaste, and glue.

Where They Can Be Found:

• Introduced species; thrives in urban areas, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.
• Prefers warm, humid environments with easy access to food and water.

Facts About the German Cockroach:

• Known as a major pest due to its rapid reproduction and ability to spread diseases.
• Females carry an egg case (ootheca) containing up to 50 eggs.
• Difficult to control without professional pest management.

3. American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)

Physical Details:

• Size: 30-50mm in length, making it the largest cockroach species in New Zealand.
• Appearance: Reddish-brown with a yellowish band around the edge of its pronotum.
• Wings: Fully developed and capable of gliding short distances.

What They Eat:

• Highly omnivorous; consumes food scraps, paper, and decaying organic material.
• Can survive on very limited resources, including non-food substances.

Where They Can Be Found:

• Commonly found in urban areas, particularly in sewers, drains, and basements.
• Prefers warm, moist environments.

Facts About the American Cockroach:

• Despite its name, it is native to Africa and was introduced to New Zealand.
• Known for its speed and ability to squeeze through small gaps.
• Can survive for weeks without food and water.

4. Native Wood Cockroach (Celatoblatta spp.)

Physical Details:

• Size: Varies by species but generally 15-30mm in length.
• Appearance: Dark brown to black with a robust, oval body.
• Wings: Some species are wingless, while others have small, non-functional wings.

What They Eat:

• Primarily feeds on decomposing wood and leaf litter.
• Plays a role in recycling nutrients within forest ecosystems.

Where They Can Be Found:

• Endemic to New Zealand, typically found in forests and bushland.
• Lives under bark, logs, and in leaf litter.

Facts About the Native Wood Cockroach:

• Non-pest species that rarely, if ever, enters homes.
• Active mostly at night and hides during the day.
• Important decomposer species in native ecosystems.

5. Brown-Banded Cockroach (Supella longipalpa)

Physical Details:

• Size: 10-14mm in length.
• Appearance: Light brown with distinctive horizontal bands across its abdomen.
• Wings: Fully developed in both males and females.

What They Eat:

• Omnivorous; prefers starchy and sugary foods.
• Will consume paper, fabric, and glue if food is scarce.

Where They Can Be Found:

• Introduced species; commonly found in buildings, particularly in furniture and electronics.
• Prefers warm, dry environments.

Facts About the Brown-Banded Cockroach:

• Unlike the German cockroach, it does not require humid conditions.
• Known for its ability to hide in small crevices, making it difficult to detect and control.
• Can contaminate food and surfaces, posing health risks.
